“Give yourself some grace.”

Three women who know me independently of one another all gave me this advice, word for word, during December: “Give yourself some grace.” It happened three times in a single week. The suggestion to take it easy on myself came unsolicited.
Generally, this time of year, I do a reflection post on the previous year and set goals for the year ahead. I feel this has served me well. However, it is time to give it a rest. To give myself a break. To give myself some grace.
Take it easy. Engage in positive self talk. Let go of outrageous ambition. Be still. Of course, we know these things, but intentionally stating it makes it seem more valid. This isn’t a to-do list or a resolution, it is a reminder that I needed to hear, three times apparently in the same week. Maybe you need to hear it too. The sky isn’t falling. You are not a disaster. Everything is going to be okay.
In this moment of transition from an old year to a new one, we can just flip the calendar. No need to set expectations. Just take the next year one day at a time with some grace.
